This residential renovation project in SW11 reimagines a typical Victorian terrace through a carefully considered rear extension that prioritises light, spatial clarity, and connection to the garden. The project draws on clean architectural lines and a restrained material palette to create a modern yet enduring aesthetic, while carefully responding to its surrounding environment. Emphasis is placed on light, proportion, and spatial flow, resulting in a design that feels both refined and highly liveable.
The new basement significantly increases the usable footprint of the property, providing a playroom, media room and temperature-controlled wine cellar.
A particular feature is the bespoke wine cellar bar, formed from a four-tonne piece of Cornish slate quarried at Delabole. The slate was machined to create a flat surface before being carefully manoeuvred into position by hand, providing a striking and highly tactile centrepiece within the lower-ground level.
The project also incorporated a complete reconfiguration of the external garden, creating a series of connected terraces and landscaped areas that extend the living spaces beyond the house.
Changes in level are addressed through broad steps and raised planting beds, while carefully selected planting softens the contemporary hard landscaping.
Together, the extension, basement and garden transformation create a cohesive sequence of spaces, allowing the house to function as a modern family home while making considerably greater use of both its internal and external footprint.
